Define DRAGON’S HEAD: The MOON’S orbit around the Earth intersects the Earth’s orbit around the Sun at 2 points called the Nodes. Where the Moon crosses northwards is called the North Node or the Dragon’s Head, where the Moon crosses southwards is called the South Node or Dragon’s tail.
The Nodes were important in the past and still are because it is only near their location that eclipses can occur during new or full moons.
During an eclipse, the sun, earth and moon line up either with the earth casting a shadow on the Moon or the Moon blocking the Sun. In Astrology these events are highly symbolic and can represent the relationship between the Lunar MIND, Earth BODY and Solar SOUL.
(N.B. When I use the term SOUL, I specifically mean the ‘little’ light in us that seeks reunion with the infinite light. The word points to that in us which engenders the light of self-awareness as well as the awareness of spirit. That is also why, to me, the star we call the sun is more a symbol of the creative soul than our petty, security addicted egos.)
Why a DRAGON?
One way of unraveling the symbolism is to consider that the dragon is half reptile and half bird. Here, we have the joining of a land creature with a creature of the air. So a dragon would make a good symbol for BODY/MIND, BODY/SOUL or MIND/SOUL. Perhaps that is why in some stories we are told Dragons are evil or against life (live backwards) and in others we are told that Dragons are ancient and wise.
When the Moon crosses the path of the SUN (actually the path of the Earth around the Sun) going in a northerly direction, the moon is seen as coming out from the dark below and moving north – upwards into the light. Going up in the body we move towards the head – hence the Dragon’s Head. But the Dragon’s Head, as we said previously, can be a double-edged sword – will the mind/moon be eclipsed or will the sol, soul, son, SUN be eclipsed? Could be linked with that notorious ‘free will’ argument …
Note the strange symbol at the top of the chart right underneath the MC. That symbol marks the Dragon’s head and is also a glyph for the erect phallus. The crossing of the Sun’s path with the Moon’s path had a sexual connotation, the union of opposites. Sexual union and the energy is emanates is a way of bringing heaven down to earth and much magic is based on this.
If we are to look at the whole Olympic ritual as an offering to the ‘gods’ then this particular Olympiad began with the Dragon’s Head conjunct (within 4° degrees 0f the Mid Heaven (most elevated point of the chart) and will end with the Dragon’s Head conjunct (almost exact) the Mid Heaven. Coincidence?
How intriguing that not only is this the Year of the Dragon for the Chinese but that the Dragon’s Head and the MC are in Sagittarius the sign of Jupiter a.k.a. Zeus, God the Father, the top dog on Mount Olympus and the very same god who the ancient Greeks held their Olympics in honor of!
The most important Dragon and the one which most of the myths are related to is the constellation DRACO which wraps itself around the pole star, POLARIS. To the ancients as well as for us today that constellation circles around the most elevated part of the sky – the central point of the heaven’s above. The symbolism is obvious – the pole is the whole point of existence, the center of the circle, the Christ consciousness surrounded by the 12 – the 13th point.
Many myths say that the dragon guards a treasure (the pole) and that the dragon never sleeps. In one myth HERA, the female counterpart of ZEUS, chooses the dragon to guard her sacred tree of golden apples (the pole, maypole, axis mundi). When Hercules kills the dragon in order to steal the apples, Hera throws the dragon into the sky to become the constellation Draco to circumvent the center of the heavens or the throne of Zeus/Hera forever.
In the game of chess the main strategy is to control the centre of the board. In the Castaneda books, Carlos recounts that Don Juan, the Indian shaman, would make him measure himself meticulously in order to find his exact center. The glyph of the SUN, the RULER, the KING is drawn as a circle with a dot in the centre.
In the center of our head is the pineal gland. My point is that there is an obvious connection between dragons, Zeus, the center point and the Olympic games.
The chart of the opening ceremony has a formation called a ‘YOD’ involving Pluto the now ‘dwarf’ planet of transformation at 7 degrees, Jupiter/Zeus, the King of the gods, planet of the principle of mental expansion at 9 (!) degrees and the SUN, the hero, the light of awareness at 5 (!) degrees.
Pluto or that force which destroys the old and paves the way for the new, is at the Apex of this green and blue triangle in the HOUSE of AQUARIUS. Pluto also rules POWER and its struggles.
The theme developing here is one of who will have the power in Aquarian matters, the most important of course being the upcoming Aquarian Age. Aquarius is the sign of social and intellectual values. Who gets to set these values and standards for the coming years? (People pump money into what they value – see?- control peoples’ values, control the flow of money)
The Apex planet shows the direction or goal of the dynamic energy involved in the triangle – as if the energy is being squeezed through the narrow angle. An equilateral triangle has no specific apex and hence is more stable. A ‘YOD’ on the other hand, creates a shift, even a paradigm shift or a change of philosophy or goal.
The chart for sunrise, December 21, 2012 also has a YOD.
By the time of the Closing Ceremony, the planets have moved away from the yod formation but something equally interesting occurs. Saturn and Mars come into alignment in the 9th house of Jupiter/Zeus also known as the house of Sagittarius. Sagittarius rules over mental expansion, philosophy, religion, foreign issues and large symbolic sporting (religious) events – especially those honoring Jupiter/Zeus.
But Mars (personal drive) and Saturn (principle of contraction) holding hands can indicate someone having to put on the brakes – which can just mean that the games are ending. But it can also indicate an attempt to stop or control the paradigm shift as well as any mental expansion as promised by the YOD.
Mars (the god of war, competition and initiative) makes an almost exact 120 degree angle (trine) to the Moon which represents the ‘people’. Trines engender some kind of expression or display – perhaps of the initiative of the people or a military theme within the closing ceremony. But there is also a trine from Saturn indicating a display of control or restriction coming from the house of Zeus. Since AIR signs are involved it may also have something to do with the social aspects of the games as well as foreign relations and the media.
We live within a polarized world, therefore, given any moment of time and its corresponding chart, somewhere in the world the energies will be played out in an evolutionary manner and somewhere else in the world, the configurations shown by the chart will be played out in an involutionary manner i.e., designed to drive us deeper into the material world; more unconscious drives, more fear, more survival issues.
It has been written many times that the ‘dark’ materialized forces have had the edge so far for the past 12,000 or so years – the imbalance has been to its advantage. Some say this is about to change…
