Discover Your Inner Strength During Life’s Disorienting Transitions

Falling Off Your Map of the WorldLorna Bevan – David Whyte’s poem Finisterre-literally “World’s End”—evokes themes of endings, new beginnings, and the acceptance of change. The imagery of the road leading into the ocean and the rising moon symbolizes the transition from one chapter of life to another, being confronted with the unknown and having to abandon the familiar to forge a new path.

“The road in the end taking the path the sun had taken,
into the western sea, and the moon rising behind you
as you stood where ground turned to ocean: no way
to your future now but the way your shadow could take,
walking before you across water, going where shadows go,
no way to make sense of a world that wouldn’t let you pass
except to call an end to the way you had come,
to take out each frayed letter you brought
and light their illumined corners, and to read
them as they drifted through the western light;
to empty your bags; to sort this and to leave that;
to promise what you needed to promise all along,
and to abandon the shoes that had brought you here
right at the water’s edge, not because you had given up
but because now, you would find a different way to tread,
and because, through it all, part of you could still walk on,
no matter how, over the waves.” – Finisterre

Falling Off Your Map of the World

As Saturn and Neptune turn back and retreat from birthing the New on the Aries Point, pulling you back down with them into the transpersonal depths of Pisces dark waters until next Spring, you are standing on the very edge of your own Finisterre-the end of your old map of the world.

If you feel like nothing but a bundle of ragged edges, exhausted, lost, abandoned, hopeless, scattered, fragmented, your nights spent tossing and turning in strange dreams of labyrinths or shipwrecks, that is your psyche trying to re-orient to these vast collective energies.

This transitional weirdness of not all There and not all Here yet either is deeply uncomfortable. The ego craves company while spirit wants to connect in solitude. So many people, situations, careers, roles and beliefs no longer resonate with you…

What you are experiencing is the totally disorienting hang time between dying to your old Self and reconnecting to the New.

The old popular option of overriding uncomfortable feelings by pushing on, by seeking distraction in shiny new things, no longer works. If you try, life will push back- hard

Sit with it. Stay with it.

“All that you are seeking is also seeking you. If you lie still, sit still, it will find you. It has been waiting for you a long time.” – Clarissa Pinkola Estes
