NPR’s Maher refused to resign before funding cut: Inside the controversy

Report: NPR’s Maher Refused Internal Demands to Resign “For the Good of Public Media” Before Loss of Funding

Report: NPR’s Maher Refused Internal Demands to Resign “For the Good of Public Media” Before Loss of FundingJonathan Turley – The New York Times reports that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) called on National Public Radio (NPR) CEO Katherine Maher to resign before all federal funding for both the CPB and NPR was cut off. As in the past, Maher and the NPR board chose their own agendas over the interests of their institution and public radio.

I have long been a critic of Maher since her inexplicable selection by the NPR board to lead the media organization. Despite years of objections to NPR’s overt bias, many critics genuinely wanted NPR to reverse course and adopt more balanced coverage. That is why, when NPR was searching for a new CEO, I encouraged the board to hire a moderate figure without a history of political advocacy or controversy. Continue reading

The Case Against NPR: A Deep Dive Into Bias & Controversy

NPR’s CEO Just Made the Best Case Yet for Defunding NPR

NPR’s CEO Just Made the Best Case Yet for Defunding NPRJonathan Turley – “This is NPR.”

Unfortunately for National Public Radio, that proved all too true this week. In one of the most cringeworthy appearances in Congress, Katherine Maher imploded in a House hearing on the public funding of the liberal radio outlet.

By the end of her series of contradictions and admissions, Maher had made the definitive case for ending public funding for NPR and state-subsidized media. Continue reading

The Debate Over NPR’s Federal Funding and Bias

The Debate Over NPR's Federal Funding and BiasJonathan Turley – “This is NPR.” That tagline has long been used for National Public Radio, but what it is remains remarkably in doubt. NPR remains something of a curiosity. It is a state-subsidized media outlet in a country that rejects state media. It is a site that routinely pitches for its sponsors while insisting that it does not have commercials. That confusion may be on the way to a final resolution after the election. NPR is about to have a reckoning with precisely what it is and what it represents.

While I once appeared regularly on NPR, I grew more critical of the outlet as it became overtly political in its coverage and intolerant of opposing views. Continue reading

NPR’s Lack of Viewpoint Diversity Exposed By Senior Editor

NPR's Lack of Viewpoint Diversity Exposed By Senior EditorFrieda Powers – Accusations of biased coverage at NPR were leveled by a senior business editor who ignited a wave of backlash against the left-leaning public radio broadcaster.

Award-winning journalist Uri Berliner blew the whistle on his own employer in a blistering essay for the Free Press published Tuesday which called out the outlet’s lack of “viewpoint diversity” as well as the glaring disparity in the number of Democrats and Republicans in the newsroom. NPR is Racist! Now Let’s Tear Up the Race Card

NPR is Racist! Now Let's Tear Up the Race CardChristopher Chantrill – So they are calling the Tennessee Republicans racists because they expelled from the state legislature two Democrats that led a bull-horn armed insurrection. Of course they are, because both Rep. Justin Jones and Rep. Justin Pearson are Black. It’s just like the Redeemers after the Civil War, writes Jemar Tisby.

Here’s my advice to the Tennessee Republicans: Don’t whiff on this. Don’t apologize. You must say something like: “Of course it was racist. Any time you make a Black person in America accountable for their actions, experts agree, that’s racist. But we believe in democracy, not race.” Continue reading
