Two Essential Oils For Better Sleep

Two Essential Oils For Better SleepNick Polizzi – We usually think of sight and hearing as our main senses, but what we smell has the strongest impact on our emotions. The olfactory receptors in our brain connect directly to the limbic system, where emotions begin.

This may be why essential oils (the distilled essence of various plants and flowers) are so potent.

There are over 90 types of essential oils, all with unique impacts on the body and mind — and they are extremely concentrated. For example, it’s estimated that it takes roughly 220 pounds of lavender flowers to produce a single pound of lavender oil! Continue reading

List Of Essential Oils For Health And Survival

“Most essential oils will outlive you and I. There is no shelf life for pure plant essence with the exception of citrus EOs which should be replaced annually. This is a very special benefit and, an economical one!” – G. Levy & R. Schiffhauer

bottles_EssentialOilsThe world can be a dangerous place. It is not as though we intentionally try to live dangerously, it kind of, sort of just… happens. Of course, we are being more than a little bit facetious when we say that because surely there is more to it than that. We’ve seen enough natural disasters over the last 10 years to realize that no one is immune, and Mother Nature isn’t selective. And there are dozens of other scary events that occur that are not-so-natural. Sickness, war, civil unrest, nuclear meltdowns – these are things that are within our sphere of reality.

Realistically, we could find ourselves fending for ourselves and our families for some time, should the power go out or our water supply rendered unfit to drink or, cut off completely.

Rather than fear and cower at the thought of these disruptive and frightening events, we prepare. This is not by chance. Being prepared must be purposeful and intentional. It does not happen by accident and it does not happen without of bit of work coupled with thought, time and resources. And the payback? The payback is knowing that if a disaster comes along (heaven forbid) you will be able to take care of yourself and your family. It is your life. Preparedness will help you avoid a trip to Camp FEMA if disaster strikes.

Think about your family’s health needs, and ask yourself these questions…

Essential Oils Oregano, Rosemary, Effective In Ringworm Treatment

NaturalSociety  July 25 2013

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, most commonly treated with over-the-counter creams. But this infection is notoriously resistant to treatment and often comes back again and again. Of course there are numerous home remedies for ringworm, with a recent study indicating that essential oils may be as effective (if not more effective) than conventional treatments for ringworm, giving us another natural remedy to add to our “medicine” cabinet.

According to scientists with the Department of Veterinary Science at the University of Pisa in Italy, a combination of 5% oregano essential oil, 5% rosemary essential oil, and 2% wild thyme essential oil mixed into a base of sweet almond oil was effective at treating severe ringworm infections in cats and sheep.

As GreenMedInfo reports, this fungal infection is common in animals as it is in humans. Because it is contagious and difficult to get rid of, some veterinarians don’t even want infected pets in their clinic. In humans, the telltale signs of ringworm are red, itchy patches of skin that are often shaped in a circle, hence the name. Despite the name, however, ringworm is not a worm or parasite at all. In fact, it’s a similar fungus that causes jock itch and athlete’s foot; all three are known as “tinea”.

The Miracle of Tea Tree Oil: 80 Amazing Uses for Survival

Before It’s News May 21 2013

Essential oils have been used for healing and medicinal purposes for centuries and most certainly long before we had pills, capsules and big pharma to take care of our medical woes.  And while there is a place for manufactured pharmaceuticals in our survival medicine kit, there exists the possibility that none will be available or that they will be in such scarce supply that they should be reserved for only the most dire of circumstances.

For that reason, many preppers and individuals seeking self-reliance are learning to use essential oils to manage the both routine and not-so-routine maladies that occur in daily life.  There are about a dozen or so essential oils that belong in every survival kit including tea tree, peppermint, lavender, clove, rosemary and lemon among others. All of these essential oils have healing properties but today I would like to focus on just one, tea tree oil.

A Brief History Of Tea Tree Oil

Melaleuca_armillaris tea tree flowerIt is believed that the Aborigines of Australia have been using the leaves of the indigenous Malaleuca Tree (whose leaves are used to make tea tree oil) in their medications for centuries. They inhaled the oils from the crushed leaves to treat coughs and colds, sprinkled crushed leaves on their wounds and used an infusion of soaked leaves to treat sore throats or skin ailments.

Use of the oil itself, as opposed to the un-extracted plant material, did not become common practice until researcher Arthur Penfold published the first reports of its antimicrobial activity in a series of papers in the 1920s and 1930s. In evaluating the antimicrobial activity, he found that tea tree oil was 11 times more active thanphenol.

The commercial tea tree oil industry was born shortly thereafter although interest in tea tree oil ebbed  after World War II, presumably due to the development of effective antibiotics and the waning image of natural products. Interest was rekindled in the 1970s as part of the general renaissance of interest in natural products.

For thousands of years, the derivatives of the Malaleuca Tree have been effective in treating a wide variety of ailments.  Here are 80 reasons why you should use it, too!

Could Lavender Be The Solution To Drug-Resistant Infections?

Natural Society April 17 2013

Essential oilOften in life, our biggest problems are those we brought upon ourselves; the same could be said for medical problems. Many of our modern diseases and ailments are completely preventable and only present because we have somehow deprived our bodies of the ability to heal themselves. In that same vein, one of the biggest concerns of the health world is an infection that cannot be stopped, an issue largely due to the overuse of antibiotics. But there are many potential solutions for this issue – lavender is one of those solutions.

Using Lavender for Drug-Resistant Infections

For the medical community, drug-resistant infections like MRSA pose serious challenges. These infections have evolved overtime to be virtually indestructible in the face of modern medicine. They look at modern antibiotics and laugh. So, when faced with these infections, doctors increase the dose, combine different drugs and basically throw everything in their arsenal at the infected person to try and get the problem under control.
