Popular American Foods Contaminated with Monsanto’s Glyphosate Weedkiller

GlyphosateCarolanne Wright – Classified as “probably carcinogenic” by the World Health Organization, glyphosate — the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup and the world’s most widely used herbicide — has been found in a variety of best-selling American foods at disturbing levels, says a new report by Food Democracy Now! and The Detox Project.

Anresco Laboratories, an ISO 17025 accredited and FDA-registered facility in San Francisco, was commissioned to test for glyphosate in a large range of foods. Founded in 1943 by Dr. Sylvan Eisenberg, Anresco is the forerunner in providing food safety analyses for pesticides, microbiology and nutritional labeling.

Using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) — considered the “gold standard” of testing methods — the lab detected alarming levels of glyphosate in General Mills’ Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Raisin Bran and Frosted Flakes, and PepsiCo’s Doritos Cool Ranch, Nabisco’s Ritz Crackers and Stacy’s Simply Naked Pita Chips, along with many other popular food products.

You can read the full report, entitled “Glyphosate: Food Testing Results and Scientific Reasons for Concern”, here.

The results of the independent testing are disturbing, especially considering the weedkiller is linked with a variety of serious health disorders, including cancer, endocrine (or hormone) disruption, birth defects, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, ADHD, obesity, diabetes, lowered immune function, celiac disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Children are particularly at risk.

General Mills Forced to Remove Artificial Chemicals Amid Failing Sales

Mike Barrett – Mega food-processing powerhouse General Mills has been having a tough time – along with all the other junk-food providers. Owner of food brands and products such as Hamburger Helper, Cheerios, Lucky Charms, and Pillsbury, General Mills is being forced to make many product shifts in order to please the health-conscious wave riding over nearly every major food corporation.

general millsThough General Mills has propelled itself forward with its famous products like Lucky Charms, the corporation is going to need to heavily adapt to today’s consumer if they want to remain on top. For years the company has found itself on the opposite side of powerful consumer trends, but is now beginning to morph to the demand of the health-conscious consumer.

“Around the world, we see and understand that food preferences are changing,” CEO Ken Powell told analysts. “People want natural foods with simpler ingredients. They are avoiding things like gluten, simple carbohydrates, artificial ingredients. They want more protein, more fiber, more whole grain, more natural and organic products.”

Similar to how McDonald’s and biotechnology giant Monsanto have been losing money for months, General Mills has also announced various changes it had to make, among them being factory closings, mass layoffs, and budget cuts. Continue reading

Mega-Corp Using GMO Ingredients Forced to Drop “100% Natural” Labels

“There is no doubt that more companies are being sued every year by consumers and advocacy groups for misleading the public. Lawyers estimate at least 100 lawsuits were filed between 2011 and 2013,” – M Barrett

NatureValleyIn the latest battle within the food industry over what to call and what not to call “all natural,” mega-corporation General Mills was forced to remove the label “100% Natural” from more than 20 of its products, including its Nature Valley snack bars and crispy squares. This is yet more evidence that the food movement is having a much-needed impact, even on mega-corps such as General Mills.

According to the settlement, General Mills has agreed to stop using the term “100% Natural” on any product that contains more than 0.9 percent of synthetically produced ingredients. These ingredients include things like high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, sodium bicarbonate, and more. Even more importantly, GM says it will no longer use the all natural label on products containing more than 0.9 percent of genetically modified ingredients.

Interestingly, Consumer Reports found that more than half of Americans believe that “all natural” means genetically modified ingredients aren’t used. What’s more, 8 out of 10 consumers believe “natural” means were not used to make the food, and that no artificial ingredients are used.

The settlement was sparked by four lawsuits filed by consumers and advocacy groups in 2012 that accused General Mills of making misleading statements by marketing its Nature Valley products as natural when they contained genetically modified and processed ingredients. Continue reading

Big Food Lobbying Group Spends Millions To Keep Consumers In The Dark

EWG  October 1 2013

Coca-Cola

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Environmental Working Group (EWG) today called out the big food lobbying group, Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), for dropping an additional $5 million into a campaign to defeat a popular Washington state referendum initiative to label genetically engineered food.

Recent polling shows the measure is supported by the majority of people in the state, who want the same right that exists in more than 60 countries around the world.

“The GMA claims to be the voice for more than 300 food and beverage companies that depend on consumer trust and loyalty to stay in business,” said Ken Cook, EWG’s president. “Yet GMA is spending millions on behalf of those companies to deny consumers the right to know more information about the food they eat and feed to their families. Clearly some big food companies want to keep their customers in the dark about what’s in our food. Now they also want to hide millions in campaign contributions to defeat the GE labeling measure on the ballot in Washington state this November.”
