Caving To Public Pressure: Big Food Brand Campbell ‘Moving To GMO-Free, Organic’

campbellChristina Sarich – In a recent press release, Campbell’s made several major announcements  about improving the sustainability of its foods, including an aim to offer more non-GMO and organic foods.

The company claims:

  • “Campbell’s will be launching several lines of organic kid’s soups, and removing MSG from all their kid’s soups.  In August 2015, the company will introduce Campbell’s Organic soup for kids in three chicken noodle varieties.  The soups will be non-GMO and certified Organic.
  • Pepperidge Farm will be launching several organic wheat versions of their popular Goldfish Crackers.  Look for organic wheat versions of regular, cheddar, and parmesan in the coming year.  They still need to remove GMOs and go completely organic with the rest of their ingredients.
  • Increasing organics across other food lines, and increasing the number of organic products offered by Plum.”

This is great news, that a major food brand is willing to finally answer the plea of millions of Americans for organic and non-GMO food. But it seems a little late and a bit odd considering that the major company has opposed GMO labeling with hundreds of thousands of dollars. Continue reading

Chipotle Will Give All of Its Employees Tuition Reimbursement, Paid Vacation Days & Sick Days

Khushbu Shah –  All employees will receive paid sick days, too.

chipotleChipotle’s hourly workers are about to get a serious boost in benefits. According to Nation’s Restaurant News, the burrito chain is expanding the benefits that were previously only given to salaried workers to all employees. Starting July 1, every Chipotle worker will receive full tuition reimbursements, sick pay, and paid vacation days.

William Espey, a member of Chipotle’s Marketing division, says that the company strives to keep “turnover at a minimum.” He notes that that to keep entry-level workers incentivized you have to “promise them a future.” Espey adds, “Our platform is built around opportunity. We open a new restaurant every two days. Last year, we promoted 10,000 employees at the restaurant level into management positions.” Chipotle says that about 95 percent of the chain’s managers are employees that were promoted from within the company.

Are You Being Fooled By Your Labels? 50 Percent Believe ‘All Natural’ Means No GMOs

NaturalNews | December 4 2012

Navigating the grocery store aisles in search of truly healthy food can be a daunting task, especially if you do not know exactly what to look for. And according to a new survey put out by ViJuvenate.com, as many as half of all shoppers are still confused by the terms “natural” and “all natural,” falsely believing them to imply that a food item is free of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs).

Based on a survey that included 206 respondents from across the U.S., it was determined that 50 percent of shoppers from varying backgrounds and income levels falsely believe that “natural” foods automatically contain no GMOs. As can be expected, this assumption lies in the obvious fact that GMOs are not natural, and thus would not feasibly be found in foods bearing such a label.

But as we have pointed out in the past, terms like “natural” and “all natural” are very loosely regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which means food producers are free to use them interchangeably on all sorts of food items that are not technically natural. Unlike certified organic products, “natural” products are not required to be GMO-free, nor are they necessarily required to be grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.
