4 Great Foods For Preserving Eye Health, Reversing Vision Loss

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts are relatively common vision problems in older adults. Often it’s just assumed that we will suffer from some vision loss as we age due to conditions like these, but that’s not always the case. You can prevent eye disease and keep your vision healthy.

The following 4 foods may be able to help stave off vision loss while promoting overall eye health.

1. Bilberries

BilberriesYou don’t see bilberries around as often as blueberries, though they are closely related. They are more common in northern and central Europe than they are in the U.S., though there is clear evidence they may be worth growing for vision health if nothing else.

study published in Advances in Gerontology in 2005 found that rats with macular degeneration and early senile cataracts suffered no impairment to their lens and retina when given 20 mg of bilberry extract per kilo of body weight. Those rats in the control group, however, suffered degeneration.

2. Kale

KaleKale and other leafy greens are loaded with lutein and zeaxanthin, which are incidentally also found in high concentrations in your macula. Your macula is the small part in the middle of your retina responsible for much of your vision. Research indicates getting 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin each day could assist in preserving eye health.

Both of these carotenoids can also be found in orange and yellow vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, and squash. Continue reading

Preventing Macular Degeneration, Vision Loss With Spinach

NaturalSociety June 8 2013

Approximately 1.75 million individuals in the United States suffer from macular degeneration—the leading cause of blindness in older adults. As the population ages, the prevalence of this disorder is going to grow and with that, treatment and prevention methods need to keep pace. In an effort to stay ahead of the curve, scientists are suggesting that including spinach in your diet could protect your eyes from the changes that cause macular degeneration.

The disorder is caused by a “progressive deterioration of a region that nourishes the retina, known as the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE).” This deterioration causes the retina itself to deteriorate and leads to difficulty focuses and, in the worst cases, blindness. Keeping the RPE healthy, therefore, can reduce the risk of macular degeneration. This is where spinach comes in.

Spinach contains lutein – a compound that combines with zeaxanthin within the body to create a  macular pigment—an oily, yellow substance that coats the retina. This pigment nourishes the retina and prevents deterioration common in macular degeneration.

Lutein also protects the eyes from free radical damage by helping filter out damaging blue light and ultraviolet light.

One study, a 10-year clinical trial from the National Eye Institute, found that antioxidants themselves could reduce the progression of macular degeneration by 28% over a five year period. Another found that just three servings of spinach per week could reduce the risk of macular degeneration by 43%.

Saffron Spice Found To Reverse Macular Degeneration, Preserve Eye Health

Natural Society April 20 2013

If you’ve ever priced saffron for a fancy creation in the kitchen, you may have opted to ignore the spice. Saffron is a spice stemming from the flower crocus sativus, and its rarity and difficulty to be collected cause it to be rather expensive. However, the cost may be worthwhile when you consider its potential benefits – especially those pertaining to eye health preservation.

Saffron has reportedly been used for ages, not only in cooking, but also in healing. It is said to encourage cellular repair in something called neuro-protection, something that is credited in the spice’s apparent ability to reverse the blinding effects of age-related macular degeneration.

Macular degeneration is the primary cause of blindness in older individuals. While most common in those over the age of 50, the issue can also affect those who are younger. Macular degeneration occurs when the most light-sensitive part of the retina is damaged, severely limiting sight of those thing in the central line of vision.

Several studies in recent years have indicated saffron may hold a natural treatment for this debilitating disorder.

Two Words That Don’t Go Together – “Medical” And “Journalism”

nomorefakenews.com March 6 2013

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Bad headline

Yesterday, I was scanning through medicalnewstoday.com, catching up on the wacky and highly dangerous world of medicine.

What caught my attention were the story headlines themselves. In the news biz, everything depends on those headlines and what they mean, imply, suggest. They’re magnets.

So take a trip with me through one day of the magnetic field.

First, let’s get a few OOPS headlines out of the way:

  • “Common Cancer Vaccine Ingredient Diverts T-cells From Tumors”
  • Shelf Life of Blood Nearer 3 Than 6 Weeks”
  • “One-Third of Doctors Miss Electronic Test Results”

These headlines should be rewritten and blasted across the front pages of newspapers and jammed into the top spots on the evening television news. But no. They aren’t. They might disturb the sleeping masses.

  • Gigantic Cancer Vaccine Screw-Up
  • Are You Sure You Want To Get A Blood Transfusion?
  • Doctors Asleep At The Wheel…Again

The common cancer vaccine ingredient referred to in the first headline is mineral oil. It’s used in experimental cancer vaccines being tested on animals. Seems the T-cells in the body, stimulated by the vaccine, fail to attack the cancer tumors. Instead, they attack the injection site. Where the vaccine was jabbed. Oops.

The T-cells are attacking the mineral oil!
