Guilt by Assumption and Victim Stories [Audio]

guiltJennifer Hoffman – What do you do when someone assumes you are guilty of something and you can’t convince them you did not do it? What if what you’re being accused of is so outrageous and improbable that you cannot believe that anyone would think that of you?

The short answer is nothing because you are not dealing with the situation as it is, other factors are at play. When we face guilt by assumption we’re dealing with others’ fears, victim stories, and emotional issues and there is nothing we can do about them. It is, however, a lesson in understanding that we have no control over what others think or how they react to us and to what we do.

This week’s newsletter is a podcast that describes how others assume our guilt in situations and even if we know the truth and try to explain it to them, they have already decided that we’re guilty. What can we do about it? Nothing. Should we change what we do in these situations? Generally the assumption of guilt happens after something has already happened so that is not even relevant. While it’s upsetting and can be annoying, it is one more instance where not taking things personally is the best result. Here’s the detail and what we can learn from these situations.

Can he really believe that I would go into his yard and break off a branch from his tree? Obviously he does and while the idea that he could actually think that insults me, the fact that he thinks that is beyond my control. I could explain my innocence but he wouldn’t hear or believe me because this not about a tree, it’s about his victim story and his beliefs. And I have no control over any of that.

On the bright side, the addition of his fence will save me a lot of money when I fence in the rest of my yard.  But this isn’t about fences and trees, it is about control, protection, and being a victim. I detail that in this Enlightening Life podcast audio and I hope you find it helpful.
