The Importance of Being Present

mindfullnessMindfulness is a Buddhist meditation technique involving attention to the present moment, acceptance to whatever the present is and withholding  judgment; to simply allow whatever presents in awareness to be as it is. Meditation

meditationDavid R. Hamilton, Ph.D. – The first time I tried meditation was after reading James Redfield’s novel, ‘The Celestine Prophecy’. It was in the late 1990s and I was working as an R&D scientist in the pharmaceutical industry at the time.

To be fair, I had meditated before, as a teenager, when I listened to a relaxation tape that my Mum used every day to help her sleep, but I didn’t realise at the time that I was meditating.

Specific Types Of Meditation Affect Different Areas Of The Brain

Arjun Walia – If you look at most ‘masters’ in the field of meditation, a common theme that currently exists is a big misconception about meditation, that it has to be done a certain way, that you have to sit a specific way or do something in particular in order to reap the benefits. These masters will be the first to tell you that it doesn’t have to be one specific way.

That being said, many spiritual groups, like certain monks for example, are taught different types of meditation in several different ways, so really, there’s no correct way to meditate, and the process of connecting with one’s higher self and quieting the mind can be done in multiple ways and practiced at various levels.

When meditating, one shouldn’t try to “empty” their mind, but instead, try to let ones thoughts, feelings, and whatever emotions end up ‘popping’ in there, pop in there. There should be no resistance to thoughts, no judgement of them. Simply let them be, don’t attach to them and just be at peace with it. You’re not doing anything wrong, just focus on your breath. The first hour after you wake up is an opportunity to reclaim a commitment to robust health, good thoughts, and vibrant energy. Even if you’ve had a poor night’s sleep, or you consumed too much of the wrong food (or drink) the night before, you can reset your intentions each morning, and step back onto the path.

With that in mind, here are 3 start-of-day rituals that will help to energize your body and spirit: Continue reading

Meditation During Recovery: How Does It Help?

meditationHealthcare issues are complex, and their impact is overwhelming for the entire body, even if the problem is specific to an organ or function. Illnesses even interfere with how patients behave and perceive. It means emotional and psychological instability is proportional to healthcare issues. And medications cannot resolve every emotional and psychological irregularity.

There is also a limit to the treatment options for chronic and terminal diseases. For instance, last-stage cancer is cureless, and medications also work to some extent to alleviate its symptoms. It means you need other alternatives to make your life comfortable, where meditation can play a role.
