Ways to Experience “Dadirri” in Nature

Dadirri. It is inner, deep listening and quiet, still awareness. Dadirri recognizes the deep spring that is inside us. We call on it and it calls to us … When I experience dadirri, I am made whole again. I can sit on the riverbank or walk through the trees; even if someone close to me has passed away, I can find my peace in this silent awareness.

“My people today recognize and experience in this quietness the great Life-Giving spirit, the Father of us all. It is easy for me to experience God’s presence. When I am out hunting, when I am in the bush, among the trees, on a hill or by a billabong; these are the times when I can simply be in God’s presence. My people have been so aware of Nature. It is natural that we will feel close to the Creator.” – Miriam Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann, Aboriginal teacher and artist

natureAletheia Luna – Ever since I learned the meaning of the word dadirri in a conversation I was having with an Australian aboriginal friend of mine, I immediately fell in love with its significance. I was teaching him about ‘Pachamama‘ (what we call mother nature in Quechua) and other of my indigenous ways of looking at the world, while he was teaching me about his.

Nature is one of the best healing and teaching environments that has been used by every indigenous culture to reconnect with God, or with the Divine. In a time where we are so materialistically centered, it is unsurprising that we often take for granted a gift that is so freely available. Continue reading

In the Language of Trees: How Plants Can Teach Us to Communicate

plantsMatt Toussaint – When I was a kid, I would name the trees in my backyard. They all had distinct personalities and dynamic qualities, including the ability to talk. I would spend inordinate amounts of time collecting their branches and sticks, talking with them about my life and theirs. My imagination was fascinated with their solid presence coupled with a mysterious aliveness that defied their seemingly fixed nature. They knew something and I wanted to know what that was.

Over two decades later, I find myself in the Amazon jungle and I’m still talking to trees. And they still have personalities and qualities and they do indeed talk back. Some are funny, some more reserved and laid back, others more serious, and they are all loving and willing teachers.

I now walk into the forest and feel enmeshed in this visible and invisible web of plant-ness, part of an ongoing conversation that never once left any of us out. Perhaps we still know how to speak this language, the knowledge of its universality rooted somewhere in the backyards of overstimulated city-minds. In a quiet moment, surely most of us can recall an occasion from our youth where something memorable and magical happened with a tree (or a plant or a rock) – a special climbing spot, a cozy place to read, a secret hideout, or a passageway into an imaginary world we ventured to with friends.

Signs You Are A Spiritual Person

lifeHelen Elizabeth Williams – Many people think being spiritual equals being religious. You may be thinking spirituality is not one of your traits, without recognizing that you could be more spiritual than most of the people around you.

Spirituality comes naturally to a human being. There is an aspect of spirituality in every human being. How do you recognize if you are in touch with your spiritual side?

You love nature

Do you always find yourself lying on the ground on your back gazing at the stars? Do you marvel at the rising sun?

If you keep finding each day new marvel, your spiritual side is awakened. Admiring the beauty of the universe is a trait of spirituality.

You respect life

Respecting life is a tenet of spirituality. The Buddhists know this and respect life devoutly. The life of the smallest bug equals the life of the elephant. Life is interconnected as life force flows through living and non-living objects.

Eco-Consciousness and the Power of Green Anarchy

“For thousands of years we’ve been ruled by kings and emperors… ideological demagogues like Hitler, Mao and Stalin… lately by bureaucratic elites, financial engineers and omnipotent corporations… now we’re going to start calling the shots from below.” ~ abillionpeople.org

EcoPowerGary ‘Z’ McGee – Like Pavlov’s dogs salivating at the sound of a dinner bell, we keep going through the motions of being contained and domesticated humans within an unhealthy and unsustainable system while the world falls apart around us. We’re conditioned and controlled, habituated and hardened, terrorized and tyrannized. And the craziest thing is that we allow it to happen, unaware of our true power. Subconsciously we give into our indoctrination, just trying to get through the day. We call it “being civilized.” We call it “modern.” We call it “normal.” We call it “being responsible.” We call it “being well adjusted,” conveniently forgetting the words of Krishnamurti: “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.”

The question becomes: how do we inform a sick society to the level of its sickness, when it subconsciously denies the red pill of truth while comfortably swallowing the blue pill of deception? In short: how do we triumph over cognitive dissonance? How do we empower others? Wisdom just goes in one ear and out the other. Humor brings a temporary hiatus, but ultimately falls flat against practicality. Non-violent revolution is too scary and the majority of people are too cowardly to act. As H. L. Mencken surmised, “The one permanent emotion of the inferior man is fear – fear of the unknown, the complex, the inexplicable. What he wants above everything else is safety.” Indeed. So what should we do?
