Judge Paul Maloney (W.D. Mich.) ruled that Plaintiffs Dan and Jennifer Mead could move forward with their claims that the Rockford Public School district concealed changes to the gender identification of their biological daughter, identified as G.M. As I have previously written, parental rights are shaping up as a major battleground for the Supreme Court after years of decisions in the lower court undermining parental controls and disclosures. “Coercive Control”: Parents Could Lose Custody Under Proposed Colorado Law for “Misgendering”Jonathan Turley – Parental rights are emerging as one of the major civil liberties movements of this generation — and one of the greatest conflicts between the right and the left in this country. For example, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruled schools can hide a change of gender in young children from their parents. Now, Colorado is poised to pass a law that would threaten the custody rights of parents who “deadname” or “misgender” their own children.

If a parent does not adopt a child’s new pronouns or name, they could be found to have exercised “coercive control” and lose custody in divorce proceedings in favor of a more enlightened parent.

The Battle Between Parents and Schools: A Cultural RevolutionJonathan Turley – In her celebrated book “Red Scarf Girl,” author Ji-li Jiang recounts growing up during the Cultural Revolution in China. She and millions of others had to choose between obeying the country’s communist government or obeying her parents.

“’Now, you have to choose between two roads,’ ” Jiang wrote. “Thin-Face looked straight into my eyes. ‘You can break with your family and follow Chairman Mao, or you can follow your father and become an enemy of the people.’”

Thankfully, we are constitutionally and culturally protected against such authoritarianism. Yet, we are experiencing our own type of cultural revolution as parents and schools collide over the education of our children. Continue reading

US Supreme Court Rules In Favor Of Indiana Abortion Law

Roberts Issues Ruling On Indiana Parental Notification For Abortion LawMartin Walsh – Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has issued an order that would allow the state of Indiana to enforce its law that requires parental notification for a minor to obtain an abortion.

The law was passed in 2017 but blocked by lower courts. Indiana asked the lower courts to reconsider the stay after the Supreme Court ended Roe v. Wade abortion protections in June.

The Seventh Circuit Court of appeals said it had to wait for formal notice of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Roe V Wade, which NBC News said would normally be given around July 25, before it could take action. Continue reading
