Making love to life

lifeThe Angels – Years ago I did some real damage to my foot and ended up being on crutches for five months. Even the simplest tasks were challenging, from taking care of the dogs who were on earth at the time, to cooking and cleaning house. I know many of you have been there too. I could no longer rush around as usual and so I learned to do everything I did slowly, thoughtfully, and with love.

I didn’t have the capacity at the time to hire someone to clean house so I bought a portable vacuum, tied a ribbon to the handle and lugged it around on crutches. I strapped a belt around my waist and hung the rags and cleaners from it. I put on some good slow music and began “making love to my house,”as the angels urged me. I cleaned it slowly, consciously, and with a great deal of love. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen my house sparkle like that!

Cooking was the same. I had to stop, move the plate from the counter, to the table, put the food on it, move it back to the kitchen island, and then to the microwave! I thought of it as loving my dinner. Even putting the dishes in the dishwasher became an act of slow, conscious, loving.

While this may seem silly, it made the time on crutches a blessing rather than a burden. It wasn’t easy but it was an extremely loving time. I sat still with love. I contemplated life with love. Surprisingly I even learned to embrace the pain with love till it wasn’t that bad.

As promised, the pain passed, but the love lasted. I now do the things I must more slowly and with love. I can sit still and still love myself now. I can take almost any task and color it with the same care that I’d give someone else I loved. It has been a remarkable lesson.

Here are a few pointers to help you make love to life this week

1. Pick a mundane task that you do often and do it with love

Comb your hair with love. Brush your teeth as if you loved the toothbrush, the toothpaste and your teeth. Pet your dog with love. Look at your family with love. Set the table with love. Eat with love. Try doing the smallest things with love and see how it makes you feel.

As the angels like to say, Love is Love no matter who or what you love!

2. Take something you don’t enjoy and add more love

This takes some creativity. You might not like your drive to work in traffic. Maybe you can find good music or books on tape? You might not like doing accounting or taxes. Perhaps you can think of it as a blessing to even have a salary to account for, put on some good music, and promise yourself a reward when you’re done. Maybe you don’t like housecleaning or exercising. Can you put on some fun clothes, some good music, and think of how healthy you’ll feel?

You get the idea… we can always find ways to add love even to those tasks we don’t usually like.

3.Try to find something lovable about someone you don’t like

This one is more challenging. Years ago I was watching someone yell at a clerk. The angels challenged me to figure out something to love about this woman. I saw laugh lines and started thinking loudly, “At least you have a sense of humor!” She turned to the clerk and said, “I guess you just have to laugh.” I was taken aback!

When we find something to love about someone who isn’t being loving, it is an invitation to their soul to step into a more loving reality!

Have fun this week putting a little extra love into life. It is the secret ingredient that will sweeten your days!
