Staying Fit on the Go: How to Maintain Your Fitness Routine While Traveling

travelingWhen we are on vacation, it’s all about leisure and taking it easy on our minds and bodies. I used to find it hard to keep myself fit while traveling. It was harder to keep up with my regular workout and diet routine when on vacation, considering I always have tons of things to explore and enjoy. Although now that many resorts offer fitness centers and healthy food options, it has become a lot easier to track my progress when away from home!

However, fitness and travel can co-exist without either one losing its taste. No one wants to find out they have regained pounds which they lost through sweat and pain during a vacation. We can all be fit and active during vacations, whether it be with the help of a protein shake before or after workout or through other means. Staying in shape during the entire vacation period requires strength and determination. This is something I decided in my mind, and it has been a routine ever since. I have created a list of great tips that can help all of us to stay fit while traveling.

Join Fitness Classes

There are fitness classes everywhere in the world. Before I settle for a travel location, I try to determine what kind of fitness classes are available in the area. I have been able to find boot camps, crossfit gyms, and even jiu-jitsu classes. I love the thrill brought about by working out with strangers. I get to learn a lot of new techniques. The experience not only helps me to keep fit, but it’s also a trip by itself. I also get a chance to meet with the locals and discover many places and parts of the town I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. Some of these classes are free for the first one to three lessons, so I mostly take advantage of that.

Take Advantage of a Unique Environment

I don’t need a gym to work out every time. When traveling, I try to take advantage of my surroundings to stay fit. I create a lot of unforgettable memories by just going outside and looking for friendly and safe terrains. Additionally, the outdoors is filled with hundreds of things to do that can be fun and, at the same time, a form of exercise. The last trip I took was to Lamu, Kenya. I made several sprints up and down the dunes after which I went for calm and relaxing pool circuits in the afternoon.

Intermittent Fasting

Dieting works much better than working out. This is, however, quite hard when traveling. Like every other traveler, when in foreign locations, I also want to try the local cuisines and treats. This makes fasting a nightmare. Although, in fitness discipline, devotion and determination are key. I limit myself to having at most two meals per day, which means I will spend a long time during my fasting period. I try not to compromise on WHAT I eat to stay fit, especially when I’m traveling; I only consider WHEN I eat.

Embrace Running and Hiking

When I’m not traveling, I do a lot of speed walking at least four times a week in the morning or evening. While traveling, I find trails, especially ones with great views, such as waterfalls and mountain areas. This is something that people train ahead of time for to experience, so the fact that I can just enjoy it is wonderful. If I travel to an urban location, I try to find safe paths around the cities and go around running, jogging, or even speed walking. Several times I have stumbled upon breath-taking scenes and this makes the fitness routine even more enjoyable.

Strength Training with Bodyweight

This kind of workout complements my interval workout sessions with some strength training to stay fit and healthy while traveling. I gain lean muscles and burn excess calories and also keep myself from sustaining injuries. I don’t need weights for this; I only use my body weight. There are several bodyweight exercises to suit everyone’s needs.

A vacation trip does not have to be the reason why we halt our fitness programs. We can keep going while at the same time enjoying some good times. With the above tips, you can balance the two important elements of a fulfilling life.
