Building a Strategy for Managing Sweat

SweatingSweating is a natural and important bodily function. It helps us to regulate our body temperature and to cast off excess salt. Many people look at sweating as a healthy way to flush out unwanted substances, and sweating is often considered a welcome indicator that an exercise activity is at an adequate level of intensity.

Because sweating is a normal process, many of us assume that we can’t do anything about excess sweating. We make the mistake of thinking that we just have to tolerate the unneeded sweat because it is normal to have the routine sweat, especially since there are situations where the goal is to induce sweating for health and fitness.

This is not accurate. You do not have to tolerate sweat at inconvenient times just because it is normal to sweat at other times. There are ways to deal with excess sweating to keep it from staining clothes, interfering with activities, or being socially inconvenient. There is no need to put up with sweat that makes others suspicious or suggests that you are not confident in what you do. Sweat can even become so profuse that it interferes with your ability to perform certain activities by making your hands too sweaty or by running into your eyes.

If sweating is an issue for you, there are techniques you can use to intervene and keep it at a more normal level that won’t disrupt your life. Consider some of these choices for keeping sweat under control.

Antiperspirant Techniques

We all see antiperspirants on television, bragging about how long they will keep you dry and confident. These are often a good solution, but sometimes it’s better to use a natural deodorant that can control sweating without so many potentially-irritating ingredients. The last thing you need on top of sweat is skin irritation from an allergic reaction, so keep this idea in your back pocket.

A good antiperspirant product will keep sweating at bay long enough to get you through important events that call for a dry, calm look. They will also provide the added benefit of odor control.

Think About Clothes

Clothing and sweat have a delicate relationship. On the one hand, you want clothing that is light enough to keep you cool, but on the other, you want fabrics with enough absorbency to manage any sweat that you can’t avoid.

It is important not to use bulky fabrics or synthetics when sweat is an issue. Focus on breathable materials like cotton that allow body heat to dissipate. Strike a balance between looks and practicality when you are in situations where professional dress is required, and keep some Sweatblock towelettes on hand for a few days of relief from excessive sweating.

Check On Your Health

Our bodies are designed to sweat, but sometimes excessive sweat can be a sign of medical conditions that are not normal. Conditions like menopause, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and many others can all cause excessive sweating.

If you have always sweated profusely, it is less likely that you have one of these conditions. However, periodic checkups with your doctor can help confirm that your normal sweating isn’t masking additional sweating that is being caused by serious medical conditions that require intervention.

Prepare For Your Situation

Sweating is often rooted in anxiety, and anxiety is often rooted in a lack of preparation or an inability to get mentally prepared for a stressful event.

If procrastination, shyness, or social anxiety are a part of your personality, get help with them. The more comfortable you are with an important activity in your social life or work, the less likely it is that sweat will interrupt it.

Sweating can be a real problem even as it works to perform essential bodily functions. There’s no need to prevent all sweating, but a focused strategy for keeping it in its place can be very beneficial.
